What To Consider When Choosing A Photographer

When it comes to choosing a photographer, there are several important factors that should be considered.

Before you go diving into the “price is all that matters” pool, it’s essential to look beyond cost alone. Instead, prioritize other aspects that can ultimately save you money (and heartache) in the long run.

Are you choosing a professional?

One crucial factor to consider is whether the photographer presents a professional storefront. This doesn't necessarily mean a physical store, but rather, whether they have a well-established business setup. Do they have a professional website (or any website) and reliable lines of communication in place, or are they solely working through social media? Additionally, it is important to ensure that the photographer has insurance and a backup plan in case they are unable to photograph your important moments. Having a contract in place is also crucial to protect both parties involved.

I can’t tell you the number of posts I’ve seen in local groups where the client’s photographer/DJ/bartender/other cancelled or ghosted them. I can’t help but to wonder if there were warning signs, if they had a contract, or what happened. No one wants a special event or day ruined or stressed to all get out because their vendor failed them.

Fun fact: In Arizona, photographers are required to charge (and remit) sales tax on all parts of a session AND products (that includes digitals!). So if your photographer isn’t charging you tax, don’t think you’re getting a break - it’s quite possible they aren’t conducting themselves in a legal manner as far as taxes are concerned.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY?

Privacy is another consideration; make sure to discuss how your photographer will safeguard your personal information. While it is one thing if your, say, family photos accidently end up on the internet, it’s a whole different ballgame if your boudoir photos do - and you didn’t want them to be.

Don’t be afraid to ask your photographer if they will be using your images for marketing or if you can keep them private.

For most of our sessions*, our clients complete a ‘permission’ slip that outlines what images they are ok sharing - if they choose to share any at all.

*We do sometimes hold creative calls where a full release of your images is required in exchange for a heavily discounted rate - but you know this deal upfront so there’s no surprises.

DO THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING?

Experience is also key—look for a photographer who specializes in the specific type of photography you need and who actively invests in their education to enhance their skills. It is also essential to inquire about backup equipment in case of any technical failures. Examining their portfolio will give you an idea of their style, and whether it aligns with your vision. Make sure you see diversity in their images - if you don’t see people who look like you - ask! (Side note: sometimes photographers have worked with clients who are just like you, but those people opted to keep their images private.)

We are continuously learning, trying new ideas and techniques. Our education never ends - like clothing, trends come and go and even if your photographer is very traditional or classic styled, it’s important to stay abreast of what the flavor of the week is.

DO YOU VIBE?

Equally important is your personal connection with the photographer; ensure you feel comfortable and at ease with them, as you will be sharing intimate moments during the shoot. In the case of boudoir - do you feel comfortable being somewhat undressed in front of them? If this is a wedding - you’ll be together the entire day so make sure you are good personality wise or a potentially stressful event gets even MORE stressful.

We aim to keep our sessions light-hearted and fun. We usually have some crazy antics happening or we’ll be sassy to one another - not only are we just normally like this, but we want you to laugh and feel comfortable in the studio.

HOW MUCH IS IT?

Lastly, take into account the cost and what is included in the package. If the photographer's prices exceed your budget, inquire about any alternative options they may offer. Most photographers offer some sort of payment options to help split it up.

Also, the vast majority of photographers are entreprenuers/small businesses. There is SO SO much that goes into running a business that clients don’t see - and all of that is calculated in our costs. A legal business will be responsible for paying taxes (all that stuff that comes out on your paycheck before you receive it? - we have to pay that - sometimes twice!), business licenses, insurance, backup equipment, rent & utilities if they have a studio (or renting a location), furniture, props, wardrobe, salaries if they have employees and so on. I promise your photographer isn’t trying to rip you off - they are just trying to stay in business.

FINALLY,

Ultimately, hiring a photographer who meets all these criteria is crucial, as opting for the cheapest option can lead to unforeseen costs and regrets. Whether it's your wedding, newborn, or boudoir shoot, it's essential to choose a photographer who meets all these considerations to ensure a successful outcome.
